Hey Church,

This week I am thinking about a psalm that I was reading the other day in my daily readings.

Psalm 108:1 (NIV)

"My heart, O God, is steadfast; I will sing and make music with all of my soul..."

In the NIV version it says "soul." Which brings one understanding of what we could take away from this verse. We know that the soul consists of the mind, will, and emotions. So, in other words, we are to make music and praise to God with all of our emotions and will. This definitely doesn't paint a picture of sterile worship services where everyone stands and sings hymns with no emotions or personal expression. Our worship is to be emotional with all of our soul. That includes singing and praising from our inner most being and sometimes shouting and praising from a deep emotional well of joy and gratitude. The Hebrew gives us a much deeper picture of what is meant in this verse. The writer uses the word Kavod which is often used to identify the glory of God and means "glory" or "the heavy weightiness of riches and splendor." Think of a king or queen weighed down with gold accessories and rich robes. Our worship to God is to be heavy with riches or extravagant. Wow, that is quite the picture and bar to be raised for us worshippers. Is our worship weak and frail, poor leftovers of a ragged week? Is it a will of rich expressions and exuberance towards a king worthy of all riches, honor, and glory!?
