Hey Church,

On Sunday I taught on the greatest commandment, which is love. When Jesus was asked what the greatest commandment was he quoted Deuteronomy 6:5 and Leviticus 19:18.

Deut 6:5 Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength. Lev 19:18 “Do not seek revenge or bear a grudge against anyone among your people, but love your neighbor as yourself. I am the Lord.”

Many times we hear teachings at church and we sing songs about God's love towards us but how many times do we ask ourselves the question: "How do I love God back?" We explored this greatest commandment to love God with all of our heart, soul, and strength. I believe this is saying that we should love God with our whole tripart being (body, soul, spirit).

Body:

  • We have to present our bodies as a living sacrifice (Romans 12:1)
  • We have to honor our bodies and take care of our bodies as temples of the holy Spirit (1 Corinth 6:18-20)
  • We show love toward God through our worship in physical expressions like raising hands and singing
  • We show love for God through service towards him and the house of God
  • We show love toward God in our giving

Soul:

  • Our minds- Capturing our thoughts and making them obedient to Christ (2 Corinth. 10:5)
  • Our Will- Every day we need a garden of Gethsemane moment with God to surrender our will and plans for the day.
  • Our emotions- Don't be led by emotions but also understand that faith does not negate emotion. God is emotional. He made us to be emotional beings in his likeness. Be real with yourself and with God. Remember, Jesus wept and then raised Lazarus from the dead. His expression of emotion didn't negate his powerful faith!

Spirit:

We show love toward God by committing our lives to him and being born again of His Spirit. As Christians we have to love God with a whole heart like David instead of Solomon whose heart was turned in many ways and only partially followed the Lord.

1 Kings 11:4“For when Solomon grew old, his wives turned his heart after other gods, and his heart was not wholly devoted to the LORD his God, as the heart of David his father had been”
