Dear Church,

I have been reflecting on the gift of surrender recently and I wanted to share what God has been revealing to me.  I call surrender a gift, but it often does not feel that way.  Surrender is something that does not come easily to a lot of us, especially when it’s in our nature to seek to control our surroundings.  It is often associated as a burden or having to lose something.  Today, we have routines for everything: we like to keep a close eye on our bank accounts; we need things a certain way to be happy or feel comfortable; there are very few modifications to our everyday lives…and we like that.   It can be painful to release control to someone/something, to be “hands-off” of a situation.  I think we have all wanted to step in and “save the day” when we think we know best or that our way is better.  But God always knows best.  Through the sacrifice of His Son, Jesus, God demonstrated that surrender can be painful and costly, but the result is priceless.  God surrendered His Son to darkness, knowing that we were the prize.  In the same way, Jesus surrendered His life to make a way for us to be free.  Knowing how difficult and painful and bloody the cross was going to be, He still chose surrender and revealed the wonder of God’s love.  This example of surrender has revealed that freedom is the outcome.  This is why surrender is a gift – it leads to our freedom in Jesus!

In return for His Son, God asks us for our hearts – to be at the center of our lives.   When we surrender, we become reliant on Him to sustain us and to remind us of His will for each of us.  "Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight."Proverbs 3:5-6 (NIV).  Surrendering our plans to God reveals that we acknowledge that He is greater than us, that He knows best, and that He holds all authority.  How liberating it is to let Jesus drive—He already knows each road, every turn, and every pitstop along the way to our destination.  What a gift it is to cast all our anxieties and concerns and questions to Him and allow the Holy Spirit to lead us in love along our paths.  Yes, it is costly, but hasn’t Jesus proven that He is worth the cost?  I owe all to Jesus, and I freely give it to him.
