Hey Church,

Isaiah 9:2,6-7A NIV- 2" The people walking in darkness have seen a great light; on those living in the land of deep darkness a light has dawned. 6 For to us a child is born, to us a son is given, and the government will be on his shoulders. And he will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.7 Of the greatness of his government and peace there will be no end."

This passage in Isaiah is one of the most quoted messianic prophecies speaking directly to the birth of a king and redeemer coming as a small child. This is also a popular passage read during Christmas services speaking to the light of the world coming to bring light in darkness and a kingdom of peace on the earth. John wrote of him being the light and the darkness couldn't comprehend him or overtake him in John 1 and that he, Jesus, was there in the beginning with God creating all that is seen and unseen. That is why in Genesis 1 that God said "let there be light" and there was light even though the sun and moon and stars weren't created until day 4. What was that first light? I believe John spoke of this light being Jesus himself shining in the dark void. We can also see that even though the light was given on day 1, it didn't benefit the world until day 4 when it took on physical attributes. If we are to use Peter's prophetic time table of 1,000 years equals one day with the Lord (2 Peter 3:8) then we can see a messianic prophecy fulfilled in that Jesus was the lamb slain before the foundations of the world but it didn't play out to save the world until 4,000 years from creation (or day 4) which is when scholars believe and the historical data confirms that Jesus came as a new born baby, born in Bethlehem which is the very place that lambs were selected for the temple sacrifices. Bethlehem quite literally in the Hebrew means, "house (beth) of bread (lechem)." Jesus was the bread of life. We can also see in Isaiah 9 that this king will have the "government upon his shoulders." This is in reference to Jesus being not only king but also the High priest as the High priest wore stones in an ephod placed on their shoulders (Exodus 28:12) that represented the 12 tribes of Israel so that the High priest would intercede for the nation and make judgments for the nation. Quite literally the government was on his shoulders and Jesus being our High priest bears us on his shoulders and intercedes for us night and day (Romans 8:34). One day when he returns the Bible tells us that he will establish his kingdom on the earth for 1,000 years (Revelation 20:4-6) which will be the 7th day or 7,000 years from creation where we rest with him in peace, "Of the greatness of his government and peace there will be no end." Amen and amen!

I hope everyone has a very merry Christmas and time with family and friends. Let us not forget the great light that has come and the promise of an everlasting kingdom of peace yet to come.
